The capital and biggest metropolis of Bangladesh is Dhaka (/dk/ DAH-k or /daek/ DAK-k; Bengali:, romanized: hk, Bengali pronunciation: [aka]), formerly known as Dacca.It ranks seventh in terms of population density and is the sixth-largest metropolis in the globe. As of 2022, Greater Dhaka had a population of over 22.4 million people, making Dhaka a megacity with a population of 10.2 million.Many people believe it to be the world's most heavily inhabited built-up urban region.Dhaka is a significant metropolis with a Muslim plurality as well as the cultural, economic, and scientific centre of the Bengal area and South Asia. Greater Dhaka's nominal GDP is $226 billion, while the per individual GDP for the Dhaka region is $141 billion.

Uncertainty surrounds the word Dhaka's roots. The term may have come from the fact that dhak trees were once very prevalent in the region. Another widely accepted theory claims that Dhaka alludes to the dhak, a membranophone instrument that was performed on Subahdar Islam Khan I's command during the 1610 inauguration of the Bengali capital. Some sources also claim it is related to Davaka, which Samudragupta mentions in the Allahabad pillar inscription as an eastern border realm. Other sources claim it is derived from Dhakka, used in the Rajtarangini for a watch-station.[35] According to Kalhana, a Kashmiri Brahman who wrote Rajatarangini,[36] the area was formerly known as Dhakka.
